Landeshauptstadt Schwerin - Freilichtmuseum

The open-air museum of folklore in Schwerin-Mueß is located in a scenic setting on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin. The 17 museum-like buildings of the almost 9-hectare village area with various exciting exhibition areas tell about the rural life of the farmers and villagers of past centuries. The special feature: the buildings such as farms, Büdnerei and Häuslerei and a shepherd's croft as well as the village school with garden and barn have been preserved at their original location. Only the old village smithy comes from Stove. It was completely demolished there and rebuilt in Mueß.

Different plants with useful and herbal plants as well as orchards with old fruit tree varieties testify to the self-sufficiency of the rural population and to the development of rural garden culture. On the extensive grounds of the open-air museum, which extend directly to the shore, special exhibitions, plant and handicraft markets, music and dance events, Low German theater performances, seminars, lectures and vacation activities take place during the season from Easter to the end of October. We organize guided tours for groups of visitors and offer educational programs for children in the areas of folklore, natural history and traditional music. For example, visitors can experience a historical school lesson, make butter themselves, learn about historical instruments, songs and dances, observe our silkworms and bee colonies.

The possibilities are especially varied for families. We offer imaginative vacation games and fairy-tale puppet shows. In the playground, children can re-enact the life of the old fishermen. On the terrace of the museum café you can find relaxation and muse with fresh cake and delicious drinks.
