The Environment Department mainly performs the tasks of the state environmental administration as the Lower Water Authority, Lower Soil Protection Authority, Lower Nature Conservation Authority, Lower Immission Control Authority and also as the Lower Water Traffic Authority. In addition, experts here deal with green issues relating to urban land-use planning, tree protection issues on non-municipal properties, and review and support environmental reports for development plans. Compensation and replacement areas for various construction areas, protected biotopes on municipal nature conservation priority areas and species protection areas are managed here. Support for the Schwerin nature conservation station is also organized in this department. There is close cooperation with water and soil associations for watercourse maintenance and the implementation of watercourse restoration projects.
