The department of urban development and economy has a wide range of tasks; the employees of the department of urban development and planning work on and design everything from integrated urban development planning to land use and development planning to urban renewal of the city center and urban redevelopment of large housing estates.

The tasks of municipal economic development are carried out in the specialist group for business and tourism, including the maintenance of existing local businesses, support for the establishment of new businesses and companies, and the tasks of city management. The expert group also deals with topics of municipal and regional tourism promotion.

In order to implement urban development policy goals, the department is also responsible for the sale of municipal buildings and land.

The department is also an initial coordination point for the cooperation of the state capital Schwerin in the Hamburg metropolitan region and the Regional Planning Association of West Mecklenburg.
