Within the Fire and Rescue Service of the state capital Schwerin, the Hazard Prevention Division performs the task of organizing and controlling non-police hazard prevention as assigned by the "Brandschutz- und Hilfeleistungsgesetz M-V" (Fire Protection and Emergency Assistance Act of the State of Schwerin). This includes all measures to combat dangers to life, health and property posed by fires, explosions, acute environmental hazards, public emergencies caused by natural events and other emergencies and accidents. Another essential task is the organization and control of rescue and ambulance services. The Hazard Prevention Division includes the Watch Team of the Professional Fire Department with its Watch Departments, the Rescue Service and the five Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as the Fire Department's Training and Education Department. An essential task is the participation in the preparation of requirement plans and basic documents in fire protection and rescue services.
