If you wish to marry abroad, there may be a legal standard in the country where you intend to marry that requires you to present such a certificate.

The certificate of marriageability is issued if it is required for marriage abroad.

It is issued for German citizens with residence or habitual abode abroad, by the Registry Office 1 in Berlin.

• Two people who wish to marry each other are married by a civil registrar as part of a civil marriage ceremony.
• The marriage ceremony takes place at a place designated (prescribed) for this purpose by the competent authority.

If you want to get married, you must register the marriage in advance.
